The King Loves, produced by MBC, premiers this week starring Im Siwan as Crown Prince Wang Won, Yoona as a Eun San, and Hong Jong-hyun as Wang Rin. The drama is based on a novel written by Kim Yi-ryung, adapted by screenwriter Song Ji-na, the same writer for Healer (2014-15), and directed by Kim Sang-hyub. The drama is scheduled to air from July 17, 2017 until September 19, 2017 on Mondays and Tuesdays.
The story takes place in Goryeo during the late 13th century. Goryeo and Yuan (Mongolia) have formed an alliance and Crown Prince Won is the first heir who is half Goryeon and half Yuan. The people are fearful that their country will be absorbed by the Mongolian Empire and are not supportive of the prince. Won’s father, King Chungnyeol of Goryeo, is at odds not only with his son, but Crown Princess Wonsung of Yuan, Won’s mother, the daughter of Kublai Khan and great-granddaughter of Genghis Khan.
Against the backdrop of the political factions of the time, Won and his best friend, Rin, reconnect with a girl they met seven years earlier, San, the daughter of the wealthiest man in Goryeo. Both men find themselves drawn to San, who they actually believe is a maid, not the daughter of Eun Young-baek (Minister Eun).
